10 Things To Know Before Going To Turks & Caicos Islands

10 Things To Know Before Going To Turks & Caicos Islands

Turks & Caicos was one of the highlights of 2016 for us. It is a beautiful island, and we can’t wait to go back hopefully soon! There were a few things we knew about T&C before we went, but we came up with a list of 10 things that you must know before your trip to one of the most beautiful Caribbean islands!

They speak English. It is a British owned territory and everyone speaks English. You won’t have any trouble speaking with the locals on your trip.

They accept US Currency. You don’t have to go and exchange your currency, they take United States dollars which is a huge plus if you’re visiting from the states.

Bring coral safe sunscreen. Turks & Caicos has the 3rd largest coral reef in the world. Make sure you bring coral safe sunscreen so you can help protect the reef.

They drive on the left side of the road. This can be a bit tricky. Just make sure you are prepared if you are renting a car, or doing a Vespa tour like we did.

Prepare to eat Conch. If you visit Turks & Caicos you must try conch. It is a shellfish, but it can be served many different ways. We had it fried, grilled, and in a ceviche! They also have the world’s only conch farm. It is a cool place to visit.

Travel in the off season. The winter months are the most expensive time to visit the island. Go in the summer months when it’s less crowded, and a tad bit cheaper.

There are no traffic lights, only traffic circles. I didn’t notice this until our Vespa tour. Trust me, we drove around the entire island. There are no traffic lights. Weird right?

There are no private beaches. All of the beaches are open to everyone! Pick your beach and take in the breathtaking views!

Drink the local rum, not beer. Beer and wine are incredibly expensive on the island. Take advantage of the fact that they produce rum. Stick to the rum punch or a pina colada and you will be just fine!

Go to the Fish Fry on Thursday nights. This was one of our favorite parts of the trip. The fish fry in Bight Park is a perfect spot to hang with the locals, and to eat some really tasty food!
