That Will Make You Feel Like A Local

3 Things We Do Every Time We Travel

We shared some of our travel tips before on the blog and our packing tips over on YouTube but today we wanted to share 3 things we do every time we travel. These things will help you travel like a local and enrich your cultural understanding of your destination.

3 Things We Do Every Time We Travel

Stay At Boutique Hotels

While chain hotels are generally a reliable option, we try to stay exclusively at smaller, local, boutique hotels when traveling. They commonly cater your experience staying there to the local culture. These places commonly have great amenities and have a cozy feel that make it a perfect home away from home. This hotel in Charleston and this one in Copenhagen were two of our recent favorites

Shop Local

One of our favorite things to do when we land in a new city is to head to the local grocery store. We love trying all of the regional snacks! Browsing the aisles will give you a good idea of the local cuisines, and it’s fun to stock up on some interesting items to snack on while you’re in town. This is also one of the best souvenirs you can bring back with you to share with friends and family once you return home. You can watch us trying food from Canada, Norway, and England over on our YouTube channel!

Get Tips From Locals

Of course you can ask the hotel concierge, but their opinions can be a little biased based on commissions they get from their recommendations. Good places to start are any tour guides or taxi drivers you have. These people usually have their eye on the pulse of the city and have great recommendations of things to do and places to eat. We got some of the best recommendations for vegetarian restaurants in Iceland from our walking tour guide. You could also ask your coffee barista or even a stranger you encounter on a train. You never know how you might discover a hidden gem, all you have to do is ask!

What are the things you do every time you travel?
