Small Things That Make Me Happy

Little Luxuries

The word luxury means different things to everyone, but to me nothing is more luxurious than taking small moments to enjoy the little things. At this point in my life, having just turned 32, I know what things truly make me happy. I have five things that are sure to put me in a good mood no matter how my day is going.

Candles

Candles are a duel purpose item for me. I love the flickering flame and the ambiance that a candle gives. It sets a particular mood and instantly relaxes me. But I also love a candle that has an amazing scent. I burn through them so much, I generally don’t spend a ton of money on them. Bath and Body Works has great scents (especially the fall ones) that I love!

Fresh Flowers

Fresh flowers just make me happy. It’s hard not to smile when you look at them. Again, this is not something I invest a lot of money in because they obviously die and end up in your trash bin after a week. Inexpensive fresh flowers are actually very prevalent in NYC. It’s one of the few items in a very expensive city that is actually cheaper than the rest of the country. I like to pick up a bunch of pretty blooms at my corner deli, but Trader Joe’s also has really awesome flowers for very cheap.

Fancy Beverages

I hate drinking plain water. It’s so boring. But add something as basic as a slice of lime to it and I’m suddenly all about it. I have to dress is up and make it feel fancy and then I’ll drink it all day long. I will also pull out a different glass than I typically drink out of to make it feel even more special. Recently I’ve been adding some sprigs of fresh mint to my water for a refreshing summer treat. Besides regular water, I also like to have a few bottles of kombucha, cold brew coffee, and of course my trusty coconut La Croix on hand. I usually save these for the afternoon when I start to hit that point in the day when I need a pick me up, and these never fail to boost my mood.

Ordering Take Out

Who doesn’t love not having to cook? Food delivery is so incredibly prevalent in NYC, you could order out every meal for a year and you still probably wouldn’t hit every restaurant in your neighborhood. This is such a luxury when you grew up with only one delivery option- pizza. I try to treat ordering take out as a special thing, so I don’t order out regularly. This is in part because it can get expensive, but I also enjoy cooking. When I have no food and don’t feel like going to the store, or it’s just been a long day and I don’t feel like cooking, it’s nice to have the little luxury of ordering anything I want to my door.

Fresh Coat of Nail Polish

Again, so simple, but this is something that instantly makes me feel good. This is going to sound weird, but I’m constantly aware of my hands. From scrolling on my phone, to typing out this very blog post on my computer, my hands are constantly in front of my face. Having a pretty color on my nails just makes me feel pretty. I’ve been really into these press on nails lately. They’re actually really great, cheaper than the price of a manicure, and last longer!
