Where We Stayed, What We Did, Where We Ate

Our first trip to Mexico was a success! It was the perfect relaxing long weekend getaway. This was different from most of our trips, because we didn’t actually explore the country. We parked ourselves at our resort in a cabana in front of the ocean with a stack of books and unlimited guacamole.

We flew from JFK to Cancun on a Friday afternoon, and were checking into the JW Marriott Resort and Spa by early evening. After dropping our bags in our room, we headed to the bar in search of a margarita. We were not quite ready for dinner yet, so we headed outside to explore the pool area and ended up sticking our feet in the ocean just as the sun was going down.

After washing the sand off of our feet, we headed back inside for dinner. We ate every meal on the resort property. While I think they offer an all-inclusive package, we did not participate in it. The first night we ate at the Sedona Grill as they were offering a special Mexican buffet. We sat outside overlooking the pool and stuffed our faces with yummy Mexican food. They even had a mariachi band playing music all evening. It was the perfect first night in Mexico!

The next morning we woke up early and headed down to enjoy the breakfast buffet. We invented (and I use the term “invented” loosely, haha) “Mexican avocado toast” which is essentially tortilla chips topped with guacamole, salsa, and cotija cheese. After breakfast we headed straight to the pool. We rented a cabana for the day and alternated taking a dip in the pool, lounging in the day bed, and swimming in the ocean all day. It was glorious.

After a fun day in the sun, we showered and got ready and headed to dinner at Sasi Thai. All of the seating was outside under these large palapas making the ambiance fun and tropical. The food was AMAZING! Some of the best Thai food we’ve ever had.

After dinner we changing back into our swimsuits and headed back to the pool for a fun night swim. We basically had the entire resort pool to ourselves, and had so much fun swimming, practicing our handstands, and floating on our backs looking up at the bright stars.

The next day we repeated the same thing all over again!

We were leaving on Monday afternoon, but got a late check out and spent the morning back out by the pool soaking up some last minute sunshine. After showering and checking out of our room, we headed back to the pool one last time for a goodbye margarita, and before we knew it we were back at the airport heading away from paradise.

We are not big trip repeaters, but had so much fun we would happily go back. But this trip also has us interested in exploring other parts of Mexico. Maybe we’ll head to Tulum next time? Have you ever been to Mexico? Where did you go and where did you stay?
