I first heard about “the amazon coat” as it has affectionately been nicknamed by New Yorkers back in December. I can’t recall exactly where or from who, but I think I read an article on it and then saw it start to pop up on my Instagram feed a few times. I was curious. At under $140 it’s significantly cheaper than most high quality puffer coats, but the most interesting thing about it to me was the unique design. In the winter, New York City is a sea of black puffer coats, but the cut and zippers of this one gave it more of a utility jacket vibe which I liked. Its popularity rose throughout January, with more articles popping up on it dubbing it the “upper east side mom coat”. I spotted it on Instagram more and more, but despite living on the Upper East Side I had yet to actually spot the coat on someone in real life until early February. I was walking out of Whole Foods, and passed a woman walking in wearing it in beige. I had only caught a quick glimpse, but I was pretty sure I had just spotted “the amazon coat” in the wild. Walking down the street carrying my groceries I realized a women about 20 feet in front of me was also wearing it, but in green. At least I was 90% sure it was “the amazon coat”. I caught up to her at the crosswalk the next block up, and while we were waiting for the light to change, I asked her. She smiled at me, confirmed it was indeed “the amazon coat” and we chatted for a few seconds about if she liked it (she did) and would she recommend it (she would). We crossed the street together before going our separate ways, and I walked the few remaining blocks home contemplating in my head if I needed to purchase “the amazon coat” for myself. By the time I got home, I had decided I did.

I ordered it immediately. While I liked it in black, I already have a black puffer so I quickly eliminated that color as an option. It also comes in beige, navy, gray, and green. I went with the green that my crosswalk friend was wearing because it was really pretty in person and looked super cute on her. With Amazon Prime delivery “the amazon coat” was going to be mine in two days. I couldn’t wait. I do a lot of shopping online, but for some strange reason I was super pumped about this purchase, and anxiously awaited it’s arrival. Delivery day came and I tore into the package and pulled out…a completely different green coat. At first I was confused. Did I accidentally order the wrong thing? Was this not my package? Did they change the design of the coat? It was from the same brand, and was very similar, but it wasn’t “the amazon coat”. After further investigation I did order the right thing, but Amazon sent me the wrong thing. I was bummed. But Amazon’s customer service and return policy is so easy to deal with that within a few minutes the wrong coat was back in it’s package ready to be dropped off at UPS to be returned and a new order was on its way to me again. I crossed my fingers that this time the correct coat arrived. A couple of days later, a package arrived, and it was here. “The amazon coat”. It happened to be a day it was snowing outside, so I quickly threw it on, not even bothering to take the tags off yet, and grabbed Shelby to go give it a test run out in the snow.

The inside lining is a bright orange and the hood is lined with the softest coziest fleece. The coat is windproof and water resistant filled with 90% down feathers. There are 6 different pockets and the side zippers allow for more ease of movement. When I slip it on it feels like a warm hug from a sleeping bag, but a chic sleeping bag. It’s high quality, and warm enough for a chilly winter New York City day but wouldn’t be too warm if you live in a milder climate. I particularly like that despite it being a puffer coat, it’s versatile and you could easily dress it up or down. With over 6,500 reviews on Amazon its popularity speaks for itself, but if you want my two cents, click here and buy it. It won’t be a purchase you regret.
Since wearing mine out and about over the past few weeks, I definitely notice it on more people. Just this past Sunday while walking to and from Equinox, Shelby and I counted it on 7 different women. But just remember, this is on the Upper East Side, in “the amazon coat’s” natural habitat. I’m quite sure the phenomenon hasn’t reached too far outside of New York City quite yet. Having the same thing as someone else doesn’t bother me though. In fact, it’s kind of the opposite. I sort of feel that all “amazon coat” wearers are part of some secret society. There is an unspoken acknowledgment, usually with a smile or a nod when you see another “amazon coat” wearer in the wild. Because they get it. They get the amazingness of this item of clothing. You also get the non-amazon coat wearer who gasps and points and turns to her boyfriend to say “that’s the amazon coat”. But I’m still waiting for the day when someone politely comes up to me at a crosswalk and asks “is that the amazon coat” and I can return the favor that woman so kindly gave to me. “Yes it is, you should buy it!”.

Today, I went to the beach front with my kids.
