Over the weekend I was craving a fun DIY activity and then it hit me, a fresh flower crown filled with sunflowers! I’d never made a flower crown before, but figured it couldn’t be that hard to figure out. After a quick Pinterest search, a run to Michael’s and the corner flower shop, I had all the makings of a fun and creative afternoon. Fun fact about me- I took two years of floral design as an elective in high school, so I know my way around a flower. Due to this, I have a few special tips and tricks that i haven’t seen in any other flower crown tutorial.
To make a flower crown you’ll need floral wire, floral tape, wire cutters, flowers (fresh or faux), and a knife or scissors to cut your flowers.
The first step is to lay out all your flowers so you can see what you’re working with. I recommend getting flowers of different sizes and colors to make your flower crown diverse. To me, sunflowers are a sign of the end of summer and the beginnings of fall so working them into my flower crown was a must. While sunflowers are gorgeous, they are heavy and have thick stalks, so not ideal to use for the entire crown. Be sure to grab some greenery and filler to accent your flowers and fill in any gaps.
Take the floral wire and measure it around your head. Cut a length about 6 inches longer than your head circumference, then use the extra bit to wrap around the wire to close the loop. When in doubt go bigger- you can always make it smaller. Then take the floral tape and cover your wire base.
Cut your flowers off their stems leaving about a 3 inch stem for you to work with. Create little bouquets (almost a boutineer) by pairing a flower or two with some greenery and filler. To add some sturdiness, carefully stick a piece of the floral wire up the length of the stem.
Wrap floral tape around the grouping to secure it together. Repeat the process making enough little flower bundles to surround the circumference or your wire crown.
To attach to the base, wrap floral wire around the stems of the flower bundle including the wire circle, and then cover with floral tape. Repeat until all your flowers are attached to your crown.
A fresh flower crown will last a couple of days. Store it in the fridge in a large zip top bag when not wearing for optimal freshness. A little tip- when the bag is almost closed, blow some air into it so it’s inflated almost like a balloon, before placing in the fridge.
This is such a fun group activity and would be great for a get together with your girlfriends. Just have everyone bring their favorite flowers and you can provide all the supplies and tools.
