The Highline

New york city - the highline

If you’re looking for something to do in New York City this weekend, might I suggest a stroll on The Highline? Tomorrow is supposed to be the warmest day of the year so far at 75 degrees! It’s officially Highline season people!

If you’re not familiar, The High Line is a 1.45-mile-long New York City linear park built in Manhattan on an elevated section of an abandoned New York Central Railroad spur called the West Side Line. It runs from Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District to West 34th Street, between 10th and 12th Avenues.

There are eleven access points every few blocks or so. Some are stairs (pictured above) but there are elevators at some points as well. Climbing these stairs transports you to an entirely different world. The narrow path weaves between the tops of buildings, away from the hustle and bustle of traffic and speed walking pedestrians. I liken it to the view outside my apartment window. High up in the sky, New York City is a peaceful world of secretly spying on my neighbors and scoping out their apartment to see if they’re better than mine (What?! I can’t be the only one who does this. New York City real estate is cutthroat!). Down on the pavement (in my neighborhood at least), it’s a world of dodging dog walkers and nannies pushing strollers, while trying to carry three heavy bags of groceries with two hands. It’s pretty amazing how just changing your perspective gives you a glimpse into an entirely different New York City.

On a sunny day, the light bathes the rooftops in a warm glow enhancing the various style of architecture you can see in every direction. If you have a keen eye you can also spot the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building from various points along the park’s path.

If you don’t live in NYC, make sure you add a trip to The Highline to your itinerary if you are planning a visit. This unique park simply cannot be missed. Beware though, the crowds can get pretty thick on the weekends (particularly on a pretty day).
