South Street Seaport

Hey ya’ll! We are currently on a plane headed to sunny southern California for a few days. We’ll be sharing peeks of our trip on Snapchat and Instagram so make sure you are following us! Today though, I wanted to tell you about an underrated and often forgotten New York destination that Shelbs and I recently re-visited: South Street Seaport.

South Street Seaport is a historic area located on the southern tip of Manhattan adjacent to the Financial District. It features some of the oldest architecture in downtown Manhattan, which includes renovated original mercantile buildings, and was the original home of the Fulton Fish Market.

South Street Seaport was a place we used to visit all the time, particularly during the summers. It’s right on the water and offers great views of the Brooklyn Bridge. One of our favorite restaurants in the city, Cowgirl Sea-Horse is located there. However, the area was badly damaged during Hurricane Sandy back in 2012, and to be honest we hadn’t been back there since. A few weeks ago, we decided to pay a visit, and although there have been many changes since our previous visits, we were happy to see that the area was thriving again. More excitedly though, is the multi-million dollar renovation currently taking place. Many more exciting things are slated to open in 2017 (including an iPic!).

South Street Seaport offers unique shopping and dining destinations. We recommend a stop by the Smorgasburg outpost for some Home Frites.

If you’re in the area, perhaps to visit the nearby 9/11 Museum, definitely stop by South Street Seaport for a bite to eat and a bit of shopping. There is also a tkts outpost if you want to score some tickets to a Broadway Show and don’t want to deal with the crowds at the Times Square location. I can’t wait for some of the changes to start opening and taking shape. I see many more routine trips to South Street Seaport in our future.
