It’s kind of hilarious to me the notoriety and recognition around Waco, TX right now. Our mom was born and raised in Waco, and we have lots of family there. Shelby and I grew up visiting Waco on weekends, and spending weeks there with our grandparents over Spring Break, and during summers off from school. Cut to college, and I found myself attending Baylor University, and spending 4 years in the place I’d grown to love since I was little. Since graduating, with the rise of Baylor athletics, and the media attention around Fixer Upper and the Magnolia phenomenon, Waco has become a place that most people in the states have actually heard of. So today, I thought I would share the top 10 things to do in Waco, TX-
1. Magnolia Market– Chances are, the main reason you want to visit Waco is for a trip to Magnolia Market (or to stay at the Magnolia House). It’s a family friendly destination, with something to interest everyone. Spend some time browsing the shop, playing games on the lawn, enjoying some local food from the food trucks, and of course a cupcake or two from Silo’s Baking Co.
2. Baylor University– The campus is gorgeous and a fun place to walk around. Go for a hike on the Bear Trail, pay a visit to the real live bears, and stop into the bookstore to stock up on some Baylor gear.
3. Common Grounds– This coffee shop cannot be missed. Located on the edge of Baylor’s campus, it’s my favorite place in Waco. The idea for the coffee shop originally stemmed from a class project of a Baylor student, and it has transformed so much over the past 12 years when I started going. The design aesthetic was more dirty frat house, but over the years it has morphed into more of a rustic Anthropologie. Order the Cowboy Coffee with their signature 8th Street blend.
4. Heritage Creamery– This is a newer addition to Waco, but very delicious. It sits adjacent to Common Grounds, and offers locally sourced, delicious handmade ice creams.
5. Cameron Park– This really is one of the most gorgeous parks I’ve visited. Take a stroll along the Brazos River, visit the zoo, or lay out a blanket and have a picnic and enjoy a perfect Texas afternoon.
6. George’s– This is the perfect place to grab a chicken fried steak and and the famous Big O!
7. Dichotomy– Living up to it’s name, Dichotomy is a coffee shop by day and a bar by night. Order the 1885- a shot of espresso and Dr. Pepper over ice. It may sound weird, but it’s delicious!
8. La Fiesta– Hands down my favorite Tex-Mex restaurant in Waco. I’m still bitter they took my beloved quesadilla rolls off the menu, but order anything off the menu that comes with sundown sauce and you’ll be happy!
9. Dr Pepper Museum– Did you know Dr Pepper was invented in Waco? Pop into the Dr Pepper Museum downtown to learn a little about the history of this fantastic soda. Be sure to end your tour with a stop at the soda fountain for a Dr Pepper float!
10. Spice Village– This is a collection of shops (over 90 vendors are represented!) is one of my favorite places to shop in Waco. The booths have endless options of apparel, accessories, home décor, and vintage finds. I find new favorite things every time I’m in town and pop in to look around.
