Best Of NYC | Doughnuts

DoughnutsMy favorite thing in the entire world is Doughnuts. Ever since I was little I remember waking up before the sun rose, and going with my dad to pick up doughnuts and doughnut holes from the tiny doughnut shops scattered around our city. They are melt in your mouth sprinkled covered doughnuts that cost less than $3.00 for a dozen. Now that is my kind of doughnut.

When I moved to New York City I was greatly disappointed in the lack of hole in the wall (pun intended) doughnut shops. Every time I would ask someone for a recommendation they would tell me to go to Dunkin Donuts. You can just imagine the eye rolling I would give them after that statement. New York still doesn’t do my version of “childhood” doughnuts, but they do have some pretty great options. Here are my picks of the best doughnuts in NYC.

1.) Dough

DoughI first tried Dough at Smorgasburg. I instantly fell in love. They have a great selection of very large yeast doughnuts. My favorite flavor is the Dulce De Leche. The exquisite flavor combined with sliced almonds on top is out of this world. I also enjoy the Cafe Au Lait. Dough has three locations.I often frequent the Flat Iron location.

2.) Doughnut Plant

Doughnut PlantThere is a Doughnut Plant a couple blocks from my old school, so this was a place I visited frequently during my college days. They do a variety of yeast, cake, and filled doughnuts. There are even some square shaped doughnuts to choose from. Don’t forget to look out for their seasonal flavors. There are several Doughnut Plant locations, but my favorite is below the Hotel Chelsea. If you like music and doughnuts you can kill two birds with one stone.

3.) Orwashers Bakery

OrwashersI’m not usually a filled doughnut person, unless it’s chocolate, but these beauties from Orwashers Bakery have definitely swayed me to the dark side. They are filled to order, with the freshest jam you could ever taste. My favorite was the blueberry. If you love a filled doughnut, than this gem from the Upper East Side is for you.

4.) The Donut Pub

The Donut PubThis ring shaped goodness is the closest thing to my favorite doughnuts from home. Everything about The Donut Pub reminds me of those early mornings. There were plenty of options to choose from, but if a sprinkled doughnut is one of those choices, I will NEVER turn it down. Even better, they are open 24/7.

5.) The Doughnuttery

DoughnutteryI have a confession…if something comes in miniature form, it is always my favorite. The Doughnuttery located in Chelsea Market is by far my favorite doughnut shop in New York City. They make these doughnuts fresh for you, and you choose a flavor to toss them in. Even better, they are not your average flavors. I suggest the The PBCP (peanut butter, cayenne, pretzel) and The Mistletoe (gingerbread, cranberry, sage).

6.) Peter Pan Donut and Pastry Shop

Peter Pan Donut and Pastry ShopEverything about the Peter Pan Donut and Pastry Shop was just lovely all the way down to the outfits. You truly take a step back into an old 1940’s diner. The second I laid eyes on this red velvet cake doughnut, I knew it had to be mine. I wasn’t disappointed.

7.) Dun-well Doughnuts

Dun-Well DoughnutsLast but not least, I visited Dun-well Doughnuts. This doughnut, and atmosphere reminded me a lot of Dough (#1). This Peanut Butter Chocolate doughnut was the perfect combination. Just like sprinkles, peanut butter and chocolate together are right up my alley. This is definitely worth the trip to Brooklyn.
