Carry On Packing Tips

How I Always Pack My Bags

Carry On Packing Tips

There are few things I detest more than checking a bag. If I HAD to make a list, I would say I hate bananas, canned air, and ostriches more than checking a bag. But checking a bag is right in that mix. And it’s not really about paying for a checked bag (although it’s not cheap *cough Norwegian *cough) it’s more that I hate waiting for the bag after I get off the plane. Shelby and I both got new Away luggage for Christmas, the larger carry on, and we love it! Since we travel quite frequently, I’ve gotten very good at packing quickly. I have a few carry on packing tips I thought I’d share with you guys.

I prefer a hardshell suitcase that has two halves. Typically, these suitcases have one side that is “open” and the other has some sort of closure (like the mesh zipper cover on the left in my suitcase above). I put all of my smaller loose items on the side that closes, and my clothes on the other side.

When packing, I always roll my clothes. This is the best way to maximize space in your suitcase. This is my packed suitcase for Copenhagen. We were there for 4 days and 3 nights. I packed four sweaters, two pairs of pants, and pajamas.

On the other side I have one pair of boots, two scarves, three beanies, a swimsuit (for the spa at our hotel but we didn’t end up going), a small bag with make up and toiletries.

You are permitted to bring liquids that are 3.4 oz or less and in total fit in the equivalent of a quart size bag. You can of course buy empty travel size bottles to transfer your favorite products into, but in this day and age most skincare and make up brands that you already use, make their products in travel sizes. I stockpile all the samples I get in my Birchbox and other gift bags and bring those along with me when traveling. It’s a fun way to try new products.

In addition to my luggage, I always take a backpack as my personal item. I slip the handbag I’m going to use at my destination into my backpack, along with other items I want to be sure to have on hand on the airplane, and things I don’t want in my luggage just in case it has to be checked last minute due to lack of overhead space on the plane. I’ve used this backpack for years and I love it! For our trip to Copenhagen, I packed my laptop, iPad, wireless headphones, chargers, neck pillow, and toiletries for the plane.

On international flights, especially overnight ones, I always slip a pouch of skincare products into my backpack to use in flight. I do not wear make up on long flights, and complete a regimen that involves lots of moisture as flying is very drying on the skin.
