Where We Stayed | What We Saw, Ate, & Did

Lake Placid, NY | Travel Guide

*Our stay at The Golden Arrow Resort & meals at Generations were kindly gifted, but all opinions are our own.

This past weekend we packed our bags and headed upstate to Lake Placid. We love the Adirondacks and have previously visited Lake George several times, so we were so excited to explore a new place. The only thing we really new about Lake Placid was the movie that our dad made us sit through as kids…and sometimes adults. You will be happy to know that there are no giant alligators in Lake Placid. We also learned that the village of Lake Placid doesn’t actually sit on Lake Placid. It is actually on Mirror Lake. As you can tell, the name definitely fits!

We stayed at The Golden Arrow Lakeside Resort and it was the most perfect place to stay in Lake Placid. The resort is actually the only hotel that sits directly on the lake. It is very centrally located to bars, restaurants, shops & olympic sites. It is also just a short drive to Whiteface Mountain. They are family owned, pet-friendly, have a fitness center, private beach, & an indoor pool. You can have your wedding there as well! Their were two last weekend when we were there. The thing we love the most about The Golden Arrow is hoe eco-friendly they are. In every room there is a bag for you to put all of your recycling in during your stay. They were the very first hotel in New York State to have a green roof. The restaurant uses it to grow herbs and plants for their dishes. They use crushed limestone sand on their beach to help with acid rain, and housekeeping uses eco-friendly cleaning supplies. You can read all about their Eco-friendly initiatives here.

We stayed in one of their specialty rooms, and we couldn’t have asked for anything more perfect. This is the exact type of room we would book on our own. We had two queen size beds, a leather sofa by the fireplace, and a private patio that gives you direct access to the lake. We spent so much time on that patio watching the sunrise and sunset. We even enjoyed dinner out there one night. It was such a fantastic stay, and we will definitely be going back!

We ate breakfast both mornings at Generations which is attached to the resort. The most surprising thing on the menu was their cauliflower breakfast pizza. We both tried one and no joke it was the best cauliflower crust we have EVER had! It was so light and fluffy and had the same consistency of a regular crust. The flavors were just right. We were really really happy with them. We also tried the Blue Mountain Lake pancakes that were filled with blueberries. I cleaned the entire plate, so hopefully that tells you how much we loved them!Lake Placid, NY | Travel Guide

There are so many fun things to do in Lake Placid all year round. It got pretty chilly the weekend we were there, so summer is definitely coming to a close. One of the places we knew we wanted to visit was High Falls Gorge. It’s a waterfall with a walkway all the way around it! The views were absolutely beautiful!

We then headed off to Whiteface Mountain for Oktoberfest! First we rode the gondola all the way to the top of the mountain. We love doing these whenever a destination has them, even though I’m afraid of heights! This was our very first Oktoberfest, so it was really cool to experience the whole concept! We are so glad we did it!

Another awesome place to visit in Lake Placid is the Olympics Museum. It’s small, but holds some really great things if you love the Olympics like us!

After you are done at the museum, walk down main street and do a little shopping! We picked up some sweatshirts. Don’t pass up Emma’s Lake Placid Creamery, and the Adirondack Popcorn Co. Two places that have some awesome local snacks!

There are a couple of places that you have to eat at in Lake Placid. Pop into the Lake Placid Pub & Brewery for great food and beer. We tried the harvest pumpkin ale and it was awesome. If you are coffee lovers like us you have to get a maple vanilla latte from Around The Lake coffee!

Last but not least, make sure you do the 2.7 mile walk around mirror lake. We got up really early and took our walk right after sunrise!
