Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

Recently, Netflix released another brilliant original show- Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt which stars Ellie Kemper as Kimmy. If you haven’t heard of it, the plot follows Kimmy, a women in her late 20s, who was kidnapped from her front yard when she was in eighth grade. She was forced to live in an underground bunker for fifteen years by a religious cult. While the premise sounds a little dark, in actuality the show is a very lighthearted comedy.

Check out the trailer here:

After being discovered, she arrives in New York City for an interview on the Today Show and decides she’s going to stay in the city to reinvent herself. In one day, she finds an apartment, a roommate (Titus- a Times Square robot by day, wanna be actor by night), and a job working as a nanny for a rich Upper East Side family. The show follows Kimmy as she navigates life in the big city as a now adult with the mindset of a 90s era, Babysitter’s Club loving, alphabet block letter necklace wearing teenager.

Since she was cut off from the world in the late 90s Kimmy has a lot to learn as far as how the modern world works (side note- can we pause and think about how much has changed in the past 15 years?!). Despite being the victim of something so awful, Kimmy has a very positive outlook on life. Technology seems to trip Kimmy up the most (words like selfie and hashtag confuse her) and even her clothes are stuck in the 90s. She has a notebook to help her track “Things People Don’t Say Anymore”.

A few of my favorite lines-

“Are you into Molly?”
“Am I?! She’s my favorite American Girl doll!!”

“I’ve had the most amazing idea.”
“A scrunchie thats also a wallet?!”

“I don’t have a recent picture of myself. Is there a Sears near here?”

“I feel like I’m on Bravo! That channel still shows operas right?”

“What if he’s just She’s All Thatsing me?”

This is the kind of show that after you binge watch 13 episodes you immediately want to watch it again (I may or may not have watched it three times already). With the episodes each only being about 20 minutes long it’s pretty easy to get through it all on a rainy Saturday afternoon. Season two is in the works and is slated to air Spring 2016. I know! So far away! In the meantime, after you’ve binge-watched the show a few times, if you feel like you need a little more Kimmy in your life, you can bring the 90s back and dress like her-

What are you binge-watching on Netflix right now? We’d love to hear (and get ideas) so leave a comment and let us know your recommendations!
