Last week as I was quickly scrolling through my Instagram feed (you can follow us here) someone posted a photo of a magical looking pastry they called a birthday cake croissant.
Um, what?!?
I quickly stalked the place they tagged in the photo, and determined that said birthday cake croissant hails from Union Fare, a newly opened contemporary marketplace featuring a restaurant, gastrohall, cafe, and bakery located in the heart of Union Square.
On Saturday morning, Shelby and I headed to Union Fare with our sights set on procuring one of these magical treats for ourselves. We feared we may run into a cronut or rainbow bagel situation (i.e. extremely long lines, this is New York after all, people will stand in line for anything) however, much to our delight, we walked right in the door and straight up to the counter where a towering platter of birthday cake croissants was awaiting.
Along with the birthday cake flavor, there was also cookies and cream, red velvet, creme brulee, and everything bagel flavors. Each flaky pastry is cream filled.
It was so hard to choose, but we went with the birthday cake (obviously) and cookies and cream. Technically, since I’m currently doing Whole 30, I’m not allowed magical treats like this, but I made the executive decision to make a two bite exception. Ok, maybe it was 3 bites. But it was worth it. And it’s almost my birthday. What’s more fitting than a birthday cake croissant?!
Of the two, I preferred the birthday cake (I will it anything if it comes with rainbow sprinkles) but Shelby preferred the cookies and cream.
The cafe (which turns into a wine bar at night) has cold brew on tap, so I grabbed a cup with almond milk to try. It’s my not so secret mission to try all the cold brew offered in the city. This one was pretty tasty. Bonus points that they have almond milk. I’m intrigued about the latte they have on draft. Must give that a try next time.
The restaurant is open for dinner only right now, and the gastrohall wasn’t open on Saturday, although it looks like they are opening for brunch on the weekends starting this coming weekend. I definitely want to return to try out the offerings on both menus, and obviously for more birthday cake croissants.
