So you’ve taken the step to invest in a skincare routine, you have all of your products, now what? Are you asking yourself what order should I apply my skincare? We are here to help! Here is a handy dandy guide for you to follow when applying your skincare for both morning and night.
Morning
Cleanser
I admit I’m not the best at cleansing my face in the morning. I cleanse at night before bed, and all I’ve done is sleep so why do I need to cleanse again? But cleansing in the morning helps to wake up the skin and removes any remaining traces of your nighttime skincare for a fresh “palette” so that your other products can can be better absorbed.
Toner
An essential step for priming your skin. I like to do a spritz of this one in the am.
Serum
For the morning you want a lighter serum packed with Vitamin C.
Eye Cream
Look for an eye cream that contains caffeine or has a metal rollerball applicator to help wake up your eyes. Bonus Tip: store your eye cream in the fridge (or this skincare mini fridge) to help reduce puffiness!
Moisturizer
In the morning you want a moisturizer that is lightweight and absorbs easily into the skin.
Face Oils
Layered on top of your serum and moisturizer, face oils help to create a seal to lock in that hydration.
Sunscreen
An essential last step of your routine is sunscreen. If you’re going to do ONE thing in the morning, make it sunscreen. If I were to only use one product in the morning it would be this one.
Night
Cleanser
Washing your face at night is essential to remove any makeup or just the dirt and grime that your face collects throughout the day.
Toner
At night use a toner that hydrates to help replenish water lost throughout the day.
Serum
Your nighttime routine is all about hydration. Look for a serum that contains hyaluronic acid, which contrary to its scary name, is actually a super gentle and hydrating ingredient.
Eye Cream
Your eye cream at night should be different from your morning eye cream. In the morning the goal is to brighten and de-puff, but at night your goal is to deeply hydrate the delicate skin around your eye.
Moisturizer
Your skin rejuvenates and repairs while you sleep, so you want to layer on products that will help promote that. If you only do two things at night the first must be to cleanse your skin and the second is to apply a nice, thick, hydrating moisturizer.
Retinol
While this step isn’t for everybody, using a retinol can help fade dark spot on the skin, brighten, smooth, and prevent breakouts. This is not something that most people need to do daily, especially if you have sensitive skin. I incorporate retinol into my nighttime skincare routine only once or twice a week. Never use retinol in the morning as it makes your skin more susceptible to being sunburned.
Face Oils
Now that you have layered on all of your fabulous skincare, lock it in with a face oil. I love this one because of its nice and relaxing scent.
